Our last show was in November of 2011. It’s not that I’m opposed to performing live, it’s that I live in Portland Oregon and the band members are spread out around the country, and it’s just not feasible to fly everyone in to rehearse and then fly out to do a show. Someday, I am certain we’ll be on tour again. For now, here’s memories of shows we’ve performed. If you have photos from any of our shows please get in touch, as I would love to add them to this page. – Sam 3/2020

Sunday October 31 ~ soundcheck only, in Houston.
(Worst Halloween of my life!) This “show” was a clusterfuck of bad. Soundmen arriving 3 hours after we did. Power blowing out during soundcheck. Blacktape on “the 2nd stage” at the same time as Voltaire. Poorly promoted. About 50 people there. They couldn’t get the power working, but told us we could go on a few bands after Voltaire. Really, 3 am? No thanks! I pulled the plug, watched Voltaire perform, and left. What a mess. : (

Athan and I tried to convince ourselves we could go out one or two weekends a month, do some shows, keep the band active. The problem was the energy it took to be ready to play, not finding enough interested promoters, and my young son was with me every other weekend. This is why we weren’t recording a new album at this time.

Fri April 9 ~ Ithaca NY @ The Haunt
The southern rock cover band was rockin’ the joint when we arrived for our 6pm soundcheck. I expect we got 20 minutes around 8pm, not at all what we needed. Oh yeah, we checked to a slight busy bar full of the previous band’s friends drinkin’ – always a drag to soundcheck with uninterested people in the room.

Show #123 (4)
Saturday November 7th ~ Blazes Billiards in West Warwick, RI
This show was a messy cluster-fuck. Too many bands on a too-small stage, and a woefully under-channelled mixing board. And a small turnout, because it wasn’t in Providence. I loved this show because my friend Margaret showed up; she sewed my kitty ears I use as a winter hat! Seeing her in the small audience made me smile.
1229 Main St. (401) 615-7677. $8. With DJ Matthew Griffin, Gravesideservice, Spindle Shanks, The Dirge Carolerss & Dorian James & The Brood.

From Motif Magazine | Tony Jones presents a Rock’n’Roll Creep Show for the ages (literally) at Blaze’s Billiards on Saturday, Nov 7. National act Black Tape for a Blue Girl and legendary Rhode Island Goths Spindle Shanks headline this bill. I don’t know what’s more surprising here, that I used the word legendary to describe Goths or that Jones has assembled such a potent bill with the likes of Dorian James & the Brood and The Dirge Carolers on the undercard.

Show #122 (3)

Show #120 (1)
August 27 2009 ~ The Regent Theater
7 Medford Street, Arlington, Massachusetts 02474. Cost: $12.00 adv./$15.00 door. A night of Grand Guignol excess. The evening began with an opening set of dark cello ambience by Wisteriax. Then a 4-song set from Black Tape for a Blue Girl. The carnival delights that are Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys. Dreamchild performed the final set of the evening.
This was the first show for the 2009 10 Neurotics version of the band. We were invited to play a four song set at the CD release party for Dreamchild’s Sleeping Flowers Severed, Scream of Slaughter. This was a chance to go out and do a low-pressure show, to see how it felt playing live again after a long break. How did it feel? It felt great! We had fun, we sounded great, and we knew we needed to do more shows!!!

They wanted to hear music, so with me on guitar, Meredith on violin & sam on the cymbol & wooden spoon, we played a very spirited acoustic set for them. There was something so wonderful about playing for this deeply appreciative audience in the pouring rain, in the middle of a dark, soaked field. It was so memorable, really & truly amazing.”)

Here’s a photo of Vicki Richards in the studio for the Halo Star sessions. I asked Vicki for her recollections…
My 5 string solid body Viper violin was custom built for me in about 2003. It was a design whose evolution began in the 1970s by stellar rock violinist Mark Wood. The violin was an innovation also because it straps on, around the back, and eliminates a need to hold it up with neck and shoulder muscles. This gorgeous maplewood instrument has a great pickup, allowing no distortion or feedback, unless I intentionally trigger a pedal and switch to a rack preset. I can’t deny enjoying the “wow factor” when coming out to play violin with an instrument that looks like a Flying V guitar. Unlike an acoustic violin this electric violin has no sound until it’s plugged in. That means all the sound shaping, creating the timbre with an equalizer, and boosting the signal level with a good preamp is part of the setup. For soloing or playing live, the effect boxes and pedals on the floor, or in the rack can be combined to create an endless variety of soundscapes.

Show #88 & 89 Wed Nov 3 1999 | Philadelphia Museum of Art ~ Philadelphia, PA
26th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA. Towards The Millennium: 1990-2000 Two shows. 5:00-6:00 and 7:00-7:25

Show #90 Wed Nov 3 1999 | Irving Plaza ~ New York, NY
17 Irving Place, New York, NY 10003. 10pm. Opening for The Creatures.

Ok, so get this….. We performed three shows in one evening, in two cities. What happened was I had confirmed the Philly Museum show in May, and I was really excited to play at the Museum that houses so much of Duchamp’s work. But then I got a call in October to open for the Creatures. Did it have to be the same date? But we’re industrious, we can make it work! The way we did it was there were two sets of equipment, I loaded the gear at Irving Plaza in the morning, then we drove down to Philadelphia. The whole band performed the first set at the Museum. Then Elysabeth & Lisa rushed to the train station (with only minutes to spare) and went up to New York City, where they met our sound man (Matt Green, of Spahn Ranch) and set up everything for sound check. While they were traveling, Vicki & I played the second set as an instrumental duo. It worked quite nicely in the museum environment. Then Vicki and I raced to the train station and got up to NYC in time to play the show opening for The Creatures. What would have happened if we missed the train? I think Matt was going to stand in my place and hit the play button on the backing tracks, and fake that he was playing the synth. I cannot remember exactly, but it was the most hectic day of my life.

And it was my birthday the next day!

Yet, the driving and playing had not ended, yet. We went back down to Philadelphia:

Show #91 Sat Nov 6 1999 | The Gatherings ~ Philadelphia, PA
St. Mary’s Church, Philadelphia, PA, 3916 Locust Walk, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6152. With Kevin Bartlett. Steve Roach performed on Friday Nov 5. The Gatherings website with review of the show.
In the middle of the standard Blacktape set, Vicki & I performed the extra instrumental music that we played in the second Museum set. The piece named “Raga Jog” (See set list above) was released as the intro to “Like a Dog” on The Scavenger Bride.

I can’t remember this show at all!” But then I started thinking, and I recall that in the middle of our set, the electricity blew out to the stage. Somehow, I had a feeling it was a frayed electrical cord, and I went back behind the stage with my flashlight and I was right. The power cord to the whole stage had fried. Their tech guy quickly fixed it. I remember everyone being really nice. Now I have to lay down, because my brain hurts from remembering this.

<——(2) 120 N. Grand St., Lafayette, LA 70501. This one was straight out of David Lynch. We were playing at an ex-Feed Store. It didn’t have a door, just a sheet hanging down. Oh, and it didn’t have a bathroom. You could use the one at the old-folks bar next door, but it closed at around 9pm. And then after 9 pm had to go and pee on the grain silo across the street. Well, dirt road, but what the heck, we’ll call it a “street.” There was no stage lighting, except for a single bulb. And a table lamp. So I set up the table with the lamp near the back of the stage, and Elysabeth or Lisa would sit at the table, when they weren’t on a song. It was just so bizarre, it was wonderful. With Slow Motion.

Then I would look around, confused. I also spoke at the university during some sort of presentation on Vampires. I read from my book, which was NOT about Vampires. <——(2) To coincide with our show in Wheaton, The Washington Post ran a review of Remnants of a deeper purity in the classical music section. Overall, it’s a great review. “Unfortunately (Rosenthal’s) lyrics read like a cross between Victorian doggerel & literary soft porn.” Ooof! The problem with this show is that it was supposedly a “Washington show” but it was too far from town, and the mass transit shut down relatively early, so people had to leave before we even got on stage, after the two openers. Dumb.

At this show and the August 27th Club Laga show, we opened for Faith & the Muse under the band name “the lush garden.” The idea behind that was I thought we’d do a few shows without pressure, while warming up with new vocalist Dominque, It was probably an unnecessary defensive plan, as things were just fine

Psst! Projekt Label’s Going Live With Its Dark Sound June 21, 1996 | By Achy Obejas.
Chicago Tribune article (from the images below) can be read online here.

It is true. Even though The rope was released in 1986, it was 10 years before the band performed our first show. The Projekfest gathered together the label’s acts, and there was no way it could happen without us performing. We practiced for a few days in my living room, before the show. Oscar helped us keep it together as he had played live many many times with his various bands. I was still learning how to perform. – Sam 3/2020

May 8 1987 • Live at KSBR • Listen at Bandcamp. With Nicole Falzone on drums on 5 tracks, and Richard Watson on clarinet on one track.

March 1985. This was the only time I played live solo electronic music. I performed the “An Hour of Ambience” set twice in my college art gallery, as the accompaniment to an hour of my video art. Broward Community College, Davie Florida.

February 1983. It was nearly-40 years ago today, Patrick Ogle’s ugly orange la-z-boy taught the band to play… Thanatos rehearsing (for some reason) in Pat’s living room. That’s the same Moog MG-1 that’s I have today, and use for occasional spice on my songs.
