Big Takeover #93
By Marcel Feldmar
When this first appeared in 1987, I was a young darkwaver teen, mesmerized by these sirens — falling between Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil with a little Dead Can Dance twist and a slight leaning toward some more ambient electronic midnight shine. But now, it’s almost a brand-new album. The mood and shadows I remember, but this is completely remixed and remastered after 36 years by main-man Sam Rosenthal. The minimalistic beauty and aching glow of these dark waves is raised up and into a more lush soundscape, but the somber melodics still shine through. The songs are still infused with those original ’80 goth rock soundscapes, sometimes carried by Oscar Herrera’s heartfelt vocals, and often times lifted by the voice of Sue-Kenny Smith. Nostalgic and new.
